Real Freight Before Graduation | Hands-On CDL Training at MTS

Why MTS Students Haul Real Freight Before They Graduate

Most CDL programs are built around one goal: passing the test. You learn the maneuvers, you drill for the exam, you get your license, and then you are handed off to figure out the actual job on your own.

Missouri Trucking School was built differently. Before our students ever walk across the finish line, they move real freight through the entire process, start to finish. Not on a whiteboard. Not in theory. For real.

Our Director of Training, Dusty Cushard, recently broke this down on FreightWaves' What The Truck?!?, and the message was simple. A license proves you can operate the truck. Real experience proves you are ready to do the work.

The gap between certified and prepared

Passing the CDL exam is a milestone worth being proud of. But the test measures a narrow slice of what a driver actually does. It does not show you what happens when a dispatch comes through, when a shipper is waiting on you at the dock, or when your axle weights are off and the scale house is not going to let you roll.

That gap between certified and prepared is where a lot of new drivers struggle in their first months on the road. It is also where a lot of them wash out. We would rather our students learn those lessons here, with an instructor beside them, than for the first time on the job with a load already on the line.

What a real freight movement looks like at MTS

Before graduation, our students run the full sequence of a live freight movement, the same steps they will repeat thousands of times over a career:

  • Receive a dispatch. Learn how a load actually comes in and what to do with it.

  • Hook to an empty trailer. Practice the connection until it is second nature.

  • Back into a dock. One of the most intimidating maneuvers for new drivers, learned in a real setting.

  • Watch freight get loaded. Understand what is going on the trailer and why it matters.

  • Secure the cargo. Load securement is safety, and safety is the job.

  • Scale the truck at a CAT Scale. Learn the process at an actual scale, not a diagram.

  • Read the weight tickets. Know what the numbers mean the moment you see them.

  • Understand legal axle weights. Learn how to stay compliant and avoid costly violations.

By the time our students earn their CDL, they have already lived a real day behind the wheel. That confidence shows up the moment they start earning.

Why this matters for your career

At MTS, training is never the finish line. It is the on-ramp to a career that can take you from $70,000 to $100,000 or more, without a college degree and without years of waiting. The drivers who move up fastest are the ones who show up ready, and readiness is exactly what live-load training is designed to build.

It is also what our carrier partners are looking for. When you come out of MTS having already handled the full freight process, you are not just another new CDL holder. You are a driver who can step in and contribute from day one, which is the kind of driver companies compete to hire.

Ready to train for the real thing
